Travel:

If in Britain: book trains early - they are expensive.

Abroad: always shop around - go to a travel agents or look online e.g. http://uk.travel.yahoo.com/

Travelling by cheap airline isn't always really the cheapest, because you have to get to airports like Luton first.

Always check what inoculations you need (go to the Potterrow Health Centre, look on government website)

Passport and any visas you may need to in advance. (http://www.fco.gov.uk/travel/)

Always get some money changed, check with your bank how much they will charge you for using your bank card in other countries (it can be anything from nothing to plain silly amounts) - travellers cheques are not always useful.

Insurance:

Pretty much a requirement wherever you go, you never know when you might fall into a trench, be hit by some spoil or eat or be eaten by something evil, landing you in hospital with a huge bill to pay.

Some flights will come with insurance.

Read the small print - some specifically don't cover activities like archaeology.

Probably cost around £50 (if anyone has wildly different figures, let the webmonkey know)

Some even cover planes being hijacked - if you're worried by that possibility.

There many many places to get this, sometimes your travel company will offer it, otherwise companies like Endsleigh Insurance do student rates to insure all kidns of things. Find anyone good, please let us know.
